About this work
The portrait shows Clara Böcklin (1855–1928) at the age of seventeen or eighteen. According to Heinrich Alfred Schmid, the painting remained unfinished because Clara's facial features had changed due to a typhoid fever infection in the winter of 1872/73 (Schmid 1901, p. 52). The portrait was damaged during the family's move from Munich to Florence (Böcklin Memoirs, pp. 194–195). The Kunstmuseum Basel also holds the portrait of Clara from 1876, created only a few years later (Inv. 1529).
