About this work
The sitter was the younger half-brother of Felix Platter and succeeded him in 1614 as Professor of Anatomy and Botany at the University of Basel. Later, he also followed in his brother's footsteps as Professor of Practical Medicine and City Physician. His chest is adorned with a double gold chain with a medal inscribed "FRIDERICVS D G DVX WIRT". This refers to the grace coin of Frederick I of Württemberg (1557–1608), which Felix Platter received in 1603 as a counter-gift...
