About this work
The painting was created during Eugène Burnand's stay near Montpellier in the winter of 1889/90. For this rural scene set in Provence, Burnand was probably inspired by the poem "Mireille" by Frédéric Mistral (see Burnand 1926, p. 148 and Kaenel in Exh. Cat. Lausanne 2004, p. 12), for which he had previously produced illustrations.
