About this work
Schnorr von Carolsfeld painted the picture for the collector and painter Emilie Linder on the occasion of her conversion to the Catholic faith (Exhibition Catalogue Basel 1997, p. 18). The depiction of Christ's encounter with the Apostle Peter hung thereafter in her Munich house chapel. With Linder's death in 1867, it came into the collection of the Kunstmuseum Basel as a bequest. Preliminary drawings are located in the Kupferstichkabinett of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (Inv.
