Interior of St. Mark's Church in Venice

Between 1833–35 Aurèle Robert traveled with his brother, the painter Léopold Robert, to Venice, and again from 1838–43. In Venice countless sketches were made, particularly of St. Mark's Basilica, which later served as the basis for fourteen interior views of the church, e.g., "The Cappella di S. Clemente in the Basilica di S. Marco" in the Kunstmuseum Bern (Inv. 426). The Basel painting was created by him in Biel in 1856 on commission from the Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel.
