About this work
Nicolaes Maes specialized in portraits but also produced genre scenes, mostly dating from the 1650s and belonging to his early work. Besides interior scenes, these include depictions of scenes at the front door, with milkmaids, vendors, and children begging alms. Léon Krempel dates the Basel painting around 1659 in comparison with other dated sales scenes.
