About this work
Johann Jakob Frey, born in Basel and a sought-after landscape painter of his time, moved to Italy in 1843, where he created numerous oil sketches on paper, especially of the landscape around Rome. Unlike many of his small landscape studies, the pines here are rendered quite faithfully in detail.
