About this work
This oil sketch is considered a preparatory design for "Approaching Storm in the Roman Campagna," 1858, Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, Inv. 612. Other variants with the same title exist in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich (dated 1853/54, Inv. 9006) and in the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Museum in Krefeld (dated 1851, Inv. 1965.504); cf. Exhibition Catalogue Karlsruhe/Aachen 2002, p. 241.
