About this work
Die Protagonisten des Gemäldes sind Fiesco, der Graf von Lavagna, und seine Gattin Leonore aus Friedrich Schillers Drama "Die Verschwörung des Fiesco zu Genua" (Akt VI, Szene 14). Das Bild wurde auf Anregung von Jacob Burckhardt und des Kupferstechers Friedrich Weber 1879 für die Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel angekauft (Protokoll der Kunstkommissions-Sitzung vom 1. Febr. 1879). Im gleichen Jahr hat der Künstler das Gemälde noch im Pariser Salon ausgestellt.
