About this work
Leonhard Euler (1707–1783), born and trained in Basel, was one of the most significant mathematicians of all time. According to the hypothesis of Paul Leonhard Ganz (1978), the canvas painting is not based on a personal sitting session but on the pastel Inv. 276 created three years earlier, which shows the head from the same viewpoint. Due to the larger crop and the book, the canvas painting appears more representative; like the pastel, it has been frequently engraved and otherwise reproduced.
