About this work
The Saltarello is an Italian dance named after its characteristic hopping gait (hop: Ital. saltellare). August Weckesser stayed in Capri in the summer of 1873 with artist friends, where he painted two pictures of children dancing the Saltarello on behalf of "Basel gentlemen" – the pictures were more expensive than planned, which prevented the buyers from purchasing them.
