About this work

Depicted is a coffee house scene in the Algerian city of Biskra. Eugène Girardet, who specialized in Orientalist painting, traveled repeatedly to Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon. This also led him to more remote regions, such as the area around Biskra in eastern Algeria, which was little touched by French colonial interests at the time.
