About this work
After moving to Munich in 1833, Steffan regularly traveled to Switzerland until the early 1880s to visit relatives and collect "landscape material" for his studio paintings on study trips. Thus, the area around his birthplace and hometown of Wädenswil often appears in his œuvre. This painting most likely depicts the view from the Wädenswil castle ruins, which Steffan liked to visit as a boy and later depicted several times.
