About this work

The subject of the painting is the murder of the German King Albert I, Duke of Austria, in 1308 at Windisch an der Reuss. Hieronymus Hess shows the moment when Johann Parricida, Duke of Swabia and nephew of the king, attacks him. He is supported by three other knights, while another, probably Walther von Castelen, flees. In the background, the castles of Brunegg on the horizon and Habsburg on the right edge of the picture are visible.
