About this work
The small round portrait of Katharina von Bora has its pendant in the portrait of her husband, Martin Luther (Inv. 177). These are so-called capsule portraits, whose frame profiles are worked in such a way that they interlock and could be stored closed like a box. Such portraits are only attested from Cranach's workshop in the short period between 1525 and 1527.
