About this work
The painting is a variant of the picture "Nymph, Listening to Musicking Children" (Schack Collection, Bavarian State Painting Collections), which Anselm Feuerbach had executed in 1864 on behalf of Count Schack. Later that same year, the Basel collector Daniel Heussler-Thurneysen commissioned the artist to paint a second version. In contrast to the first, slightly larger painting, the Basel version features a listening girl instead of two boys, accompanied by a boy playing the lute.
