About this work
On the occasion of Arnold Böcklin's seventieth birthday (1827–1901), the Nationalgalerie in Berlin commissioned Adolf von Hildebrand in 1897 to create a portrait of the Basel artist (Nationalgalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Inv. B I 123). Already in January 1898, the Basel Art Commission sought to acquire a cast of the Berlin bust.
