About this work
The Basel Madonna is a copy from Filippino Lippi's altarpiece "Madonna with Saints John the Baptist, Victor, Bernard and Zenobius" in the Uffizi in Florence (dated 1486; cf. Alfred Scharf: Filippino Lippi, Vienna 1935, fig. 46 or Luciano Berti: Filippino Lippi, Florence 1991, p. 165, fig.). The group of figures, detached from its original context, was placed before a new background.
