About this work
This relief is a fragment of a 13-part putto frieze that adorned the façade of the house of Walter Böcklin, brother of Arnold Böcklin, at Clarastrasse 17 in Basel. The reliefs depict scenes from a pottery workshop and were likely created in collaboration between the two brothers. It is assumed that the designs were by Walter Böcklin, a master potter (Körte 1906, p. 63). When the house was sold and renovated, several of the clay plaques were broken.
