About this work

For the garden façade of the Kunsthalle Basel, Arnold Böcklin created six grotesque masks in sandstone, which according to Heinrich Alfred Schmid were executed partly by the sculptor Emil Meier and partly by Böcklin himself (Schmid 1901, p. 15, Appendix). Plaster casts of the masks were made and are now in the Kunstmuseum Basel (cf. Inv. P 119–P 123). Additionally, five designs for the masks are preserved here (Inv. P 4a–P 4e).
