About this work
On the occasion of the first exhibition of this work at the Kunsthalle Basel ("Das Neue Leben", 1918), Fritz Baumann dedicated it in the corresponding catalog (Ausst.-Kat. Basel 1918) to his wife, who died in Berlin in 1914 following the birth of their second child. The exorbitant price of Fr. 10,000 (also in the Ausst.-Kat. Zürich 1919) suggests that he did not intend to sell it at all; it was only sold to the Kunstmuseum Basel in 1983 from the estate. Stüdeli and Flury 1992 present three drawings from private...
