About this work
The Basel native Otto Roos was trained as a painter in his hometown. He studied under Hermann Mayer and joined the circle around the painter Karl Dick. Thanks to a scholarship from the Basel Art Society, he studied sculpture in the winter of 1909/10 at the Académie Ranson with Aristide Maillol in Paris. By 1938, when he designed the capitals for the Kunstmuseum, he had reached the height of his career and received a retrospective exhibition at the Kunsthalle Basel.
