About this work
Paul Burckhardt traveled to India in the winter of 1913/14 on the occasion of a visit to his sister living there. The works created there were presented by him for the first time in February 1915 at the Kunsthalle Basel. The Kunstmuseum Basel acquired among others this sketch, on which the painting "Indian Market Scene" is based (Kunstmuseum Basel, Inv. 1974.14). The activity around the temple of "Jaggernat" [sic] is described by Paul Burckhardt in his text "From India.
