About this work

Colonel Johann Rudolf Merian-Iselin (1820–91), cousin of Christoph Merian, was a military man and enthusiastic hunter, a member of the government from 1861 to 1868 and president of the Society for Workers' Housing and Dining Establishments. His greatest financial support went to a homeopathic hospital. He was also an art lover, patron, and president of the Swiss Art Association, and in this capacity he was in contact with Stückelberg regarding the founding of an art school in Basel.
