About this work
The scandal-shrouded, widely known and celebrated across Europe in his time, Loutherbourg is the painter in whose Paris studio in 1769 Caspar Wolf, already working as an independent master, entered for further training—a unique occurrence in 18th-century artist biography. On this pair of paintings by the native Strasbourgian, one can read precisely that spice, that pre-Romantic frisson, with which Wolf shortly thereafter seasoned his Alpine landscapes.
