About this work
The painting was designed in Capri, where the Stückelbergs spent four months during their honeymoon in 1866 (cf. Gessler 1904, p. 63). Hermann Lingg composed a poem based on it: "But let us return to Rome! No, wait! / For now still to this charming shore! / This is a house of Pompeii, the figure / Is a Greek, and just now / A man from Rome arrives, where all tricks / Can be seen, and shows his magic play, / Antique marionettes! Sometimes two, / Sometimes one dances..."
