About this work
In the 1901 anniversary exhibition at the Kunsthalle Basel, the painting was presented in an unfinished state; the corresponding catalogue describes the technique as "still in tempera." For the coastal landscape, Stückelberg made several oil studies on linden wood panels in Alassio in 1899; one of them is held under the title "Sunset at Alassio" in the Kunstmuseum Basel (Inv. G 1978.113, cf. Annual Report 1983, p. 13).
