About this work
Merian was in Italy from the summer of 1643 until at least May 1645 and no later than January 1646. At the time of creation of Inv. 435, he was already back on German soil; nevertheless, the inscription on the back of the painting is formulated in Italian. From this, Nieden (2002) concludes that Müller, otherwise hardly known, must have been a companion or acquaintance of Merian's on his Italian journey.
