About this work
Johannes Brandmüller (Biberach 1533 – 1596 Basel) held parish positions in Therwil, Allschwil, Grenzach, and at the St. Theodor City Church from 1553 onwards. In 1581 he became Professor of Hebrew at the University of Basel, earned his doctorate in theology in 1584, and received the chair for the Old Testament in 1586. He served as rector in 1587 and 1594 (cf. Paul Leonhard Ganz: Die Miniaturen der Basler Universitätsmatrikel, Basel 1960). After this half-length portrait, a free copy was made in the 17th century depicting the bust.
