Christ as Man of Sorrows (Inside); Full Coat of Arms of Georg von Löwenstein on a Blue Background (Outside)

The Man of Sorrows once formed the left half of a diptych. Its pendant, now in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg (Inv. Gm 128), is the striking portrait of the elderly canon of Bamberg Cathedral, Georg Graf von Löwenstein (ca. 1375–1464), looking up from prayer. His coat of arms adorns the reverse of the Basel panel, while on the front, in the four corners of the original frame, the agnatic coats of arms (Löwenstein, Wertheim, Werdenberg, Kirchheim) can be seen.
