About this work

The coat of arms and dating on the frame appear trustworthy. Since the stated year 1458 coincides with the dendrochronological dating of the panel (last growth ring 1450) and the panel fits quite precisely into the frame rebate, contrary to other assumptions, it is likely indeed the original frame. Bergsträsser (1941) saw the creator as a parallel phenomenon to Caspar Isenmann; Bauch (1932) emphasized the relationship with Master E.S.; Markham Schulz (1971) noted the dependency...
