About this work
The Basel panel has been known to art literature since 1783 (Christian von Mechel: Verzeichniß der Gemälde der Kaiserlich Königlichen Bilder Gallerie in Wien, Vienna 1783, p. 365). Due to the signature probably applied in the 18th century, it was attributed to Israhel van Meckenem. Besides a Lower Rhenese localization, an Upper Rhenese localization was proposed especially by Hugelshofer. Persistently, the attribution to a French master also held sway, finding its basis...
