About this work
In the Bachofen catalogue, the piece is attributed without mentioning the signature to Jan van Huysum. Since he was only twelve years old in 1694, his authorship is unlikely. The signature seems authentic; however, the 'n' of the first name lies on a retouch, the 'a' before it is open at the top and can also be read as 'u'. Thus an attribution to Justus van Huysum becomes probable, the father and teacher of Jan. With very similar subjects, his painting style is doughier and less splashing...
