About this work
The inventory of the Amerbach collection from 1585/87 describes the monochrome still life as "a small wooden panel with two skulls painted in carved colors," omitting any attribution (Landolt 1991). Previously attributed to his brother Ambrosius, it is now generally considered a work by Hans Holbein the Younger. The technique, reminiscent of chiaroscuro drawings on toned paper, resembles that of Niklaus Manuel's Bathsheba of 1517 (Inv.
