About this work
The five unusually large canvases were likely originally part of a Passion cycle two to three times as extensive, probably intended for a rood screen. Comparable objects are documented for the Barfüsser, Augustiner, and Peterskirche in Basel, but are now lost (Maurer 1966, pp. 451–453 with note 2). The differences in format likely reflect the architectural conditions.
