About this work
The bust portrait of the unknown man against a landscape was long attributed to Quentin Massys (see a report by Max J. Friedländer for the art dealer Katz from 1939 in the file), which is stylistically untenable. The man originally had a pendant in the portrait of a woman who, like her husband, holds a rosary in her hands (auctioned on 25.6.2004 at Piasa, Paris, lot 1, see fig. in Kemperdick in exh. cat. Basel 2006, p. 84).
