About this work

Kennedy Space Center, Fla. — In NASA Kennedy Space Center’s Orbiter Processing Facility, bay 3, Don Neilen (front), with United Space Alliance, adjusts thermography equipment in front of Discovery’s nose cone. In the background are (from left) Lisa Huddleston, Dick Logsdon and Mike Hess, also with USA. Thermography uses high-intensity light to heat specific areas, which are then immediately scanned with an infrared camera. As the area cools, internal flaws are revealed.
