Kennedy Space Center, Fla. — STS-114 Mission Specialist Andrew Thomas (left) talks to NASA Systems Engineer Robert Rokobauer (right) about the Crawler-Transporters. At center is Pilot James Kelly. Behind them is one of the 5.5-million-pound crawlers. The 10-foot-high track, one of two, contains 278 “shoes,” weighing 2,200 pounds each. The crawlers are guided by four trucks, one on each corner. The crawlers had recent modifications to the cab and muffler system.
