Kennedy Space Center, Fla. — Columns of fire flow from the solid rocket boosters launching Space Shuttle Atlantis on mission STS-117 while masses of smoke and steam billow across Launch Pad 39A. Atlantis passes the fixed service structure at left, topped by the 80-foot-tall lightning mast. Liftoff was on-time at 7:38:04 p.m. EDT. The shuttle is delivering a new segment to the starboard side of the International Space Station's backbone, known as the truss.
