Kennedy Space Center, Fla. — Moments after liftoff, Space Shuttle Atlantis rises on columns of fire from the solid rocket boosters to leap into the sky and a rendezvous with the International Space Station on mission STS-117. Below Atlantis is the mobile launcher platform. At upper left is the fixed service structure with the 80-foot-tall lightning mast on top. Liftoff of Atlantis was on-time at 7:38:04 p.m. EDT.
