About this work

Kennedy Space Center, Fla. — Shrubbery is cast in shadow as the launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis lights up the sky behind it. The liftoff at 7:38:04 p.m. EDT created masses of smoke and steam clouds painted with sunset hues as they roll across Launch Pad 39A. Atlantis launched on time for its mission STS-117 to the International Space Station. The shuttle is delivering a new segment to the starboard side of the International Space Station's backbone, known as the truss.
