Kennedy Space Center, Fla. — Viewed from across the grassy marsh near Launch Pad 39A, Space Shuttle Atlantis flees the rising clouds of smoke and steam as it hurtles into the evening sky on mission STS-117. Liftoff of Atlantis for its mission to the International Space Station was on-time at 7:38:04 p.m. EDT. The shuttle is delivering a new segment to the starboard side of the International Space Station's backbone, known as the truss.
