Kennedy Space Center, Fla. — Space shuttle Atlantis casts a brilliant light in the nearby river as it lifts off Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center on mission STS-122 to the International Space Station. Billows of smoke and steam cascade across the pad as Atlantis clears the lightning tower on the fixed service structure. Liftoff was on time at 2:45 p.m. EST.
