CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Space shuttle Discovery is silhouetted against the clear blue Florida sky as it hurtles toward space on its STS-124 mission to the International Space Station. Beneath the main engine nozzles can be seen the blue cones of light, the shock or mach diamonds that are a formation of shock waves in the exhaust plume of an aerospace propulsion system. Liftoff was on time at 5:02 p.m. EDT. Discovery is making its 35th flight.
