Kennedy Space Center, Fla. — In the Spacecraft Assembly and Encapsulation Facility -2 (SAEF-2), the Mars Climate Orbiter (top) is lowered toward the third stage of the Boeing Delta II launch vehicle below it, to which it will be attached. The third stage is a solid-propellant Thiokol Star 48B booster, the same final stage used in the 1996 launch of Mars Global Surveyor. Targeted for launch on Dec.
