About this work

In southern Syria, the Azraq-Wadi as Sirhan Depression is the site of young volcanic activity, producing an extensive basaltic volcanic field. The north-northwest to south-southeast structural and fault control of the crust is evident in the straight alignment of numerous chains of cinder cones. At the top of the image, the northeast trending streaks are windblown sand deposits.
