About this work
This image shows a cylinder of rock the size of a piece of classroom chalk inside the drill of NASA's Perseverance rover. The sample was taken from an outcrop called "Berea" in Mars' Jezero Crater. The image was captured by Perseverance's Mastcam-Z instrument on March 30, 2023, the 749th Martian day, or sol, of the mission. Each core the rover takes is about 0.5 inches (13 millimeters) in diameter and 2.4 inches (60 millimeters) long.
