iss072e516844 (Jan. 18, 2025) --- The non-periodic Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS), or the "Great Comet of 2025," is pictured seemingly above Earth's atmosphere though it was actually about 87 million miles away and five days past its closest approach, or perihelion, to the Sun. The International Space Station was orbiting 261 miles above Kazakhstan at the time of this photograph.
