About this work
This wooden butter paddle was owned by the Copp family in Stonington, Connecticut around 1819. The paddle has a partner in object D.L.00636.01. These butter paddles were used as scoops for taking butter out of the churn, cutting and shaping the butter into a block or pressing it into a mold, and finally imprinting the butter with the repousse floral pattern seen on the paddle.
