Engraving with etching and aquatint after original watercolor by John James Audubon. Engraved inscription reads: "No. 46, Plate CCXXVI, Drawn from nature by J.J. Audubon, F.R.S. F.L.S., Engraved, Printed and Coloured by R. Havell, 1834, Whooping Crane, Grus Americana, Adult Male". Plate 226 of Audubon’s large folio edition The Birds of America, known as the double-elephant folio from the size of its handmade paper which measures about 27 by 40 inches. This impression is from the first printing made before the word “Hooping” in the title was corrected on the plate (GA*16984) with the addition of a “W” to read “Whooping.” Common name now spelled "Whooping Crane."
